Papa

acrylic on canvas- 12 X 48

Following the passing of my grandfather in 2017, I painted this abstract color expression. Papa suffered from a stroke which left him lethargic and unable to swallow. Due to his DNR order, he rejected a feeding tube, and we were granted just over a week to gather and say our goodbyes to him. That week, I returned home from school and spent my nights next to him in the hospital. This piece uses hash marks of impasto in a manner that resembles the marking of time, as I became more accustomed to sleeping during the day away from the hospital. The marks and ground are washed in varied white in a way of washing away my efforts that week, that is to say, although I worked hard, he still passed away. Finally, the outer bands of color resemble a military ribbon to symbolize the legacy that Papa would leave behind following his dedication to the air force.
