Black Balsam
acrylic on canvas- 48 X 12
I have always felt a deep affinity for the Appalachian mountains. Their age and magnificence are present in every moment spent there. While hiking on the Black Balsam Knob trail, I crested on this bald ridge that presented sweeping views all around. I was astonished by the view and instantly felt a god's presence at the moment. Unlike in 1 Kings 19:11, there was a steady wind that I felt was speaking an ancient language. Coming up the hillside from the valley, I used linear brush strokes to depict this wind in the panoramic landscape. In between the brushstrokes, the viewer can see the canvas toned with metallic gold so that as you move around the piece, the light reflects differently in an attempt to capture the dynamic environment of the moment.- Published in Atlantis Magazine Issue 77
